Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help maintain a cleaner chimney flue.

The Importance of Dry Wood

Using properly seasoned firewood is one of the best ways to keep your flue clean. Dry wood burns more completely and produces less creosote, the substance that can build up in your chimney and cause fires.

To ensure your wood is dry, it should be stored in a dry place for at least six months. You can tell wood is ready to burn when it has cracks in the ends and sounds hollow when tapped together.

Hardwoods vs. Softwoods

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are best for maintaining a cleaner flue. They burn hotter and longer, producing less smoke and residue. This results in a smaller amount of creosote left behind in the chimney.

Softwoods, such as pine and fir, generally contain more sap. While they can be used for kindling, they burn faster and generate more smoke, which can lead to increased creosote buildup.

Avoiding Treated Woods

It's important to avoid burning treated or painted woods in your fireplace. These can release harmful chemicals into your home and leave behind residue that dirties your flue.

Similarly, avoid burning construction debris or trash as they can release toxins and produce excessive soot. Stick to natural, untreated firewood for cleaner burns that maintain the integrity of your chimney.
